Commercial quantities weren't discovered until 1975, when a significant deposit was found in the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa's Northern Cape Province. It remains one of the rarest purple gemstones in the world — and one of the most spiritually potent.

The deep purple-to-magenta color comes from manganese and is entirely natural. No two pieces are the same shade.
