A large, striking pyrite sun — also known as a "pyrite dollar" or "miner's dollar" — from the coal mines of Sparta, Illinois. Fine, needle-like pyrite crystals radiate outward from the center in a glittering golden starburst, spreading across the flat disc and fading into a shimmering, sandy-textured edge. It's one of nature's most unusual formations and a true collector's piece.
One of a kind — you will receive the exact pyrite sun shown in the photos.
About Pyrite Suns: Pyrite suns formed about 300 million years ago when pyrite crystallized in thin seams between layers of shale deep in coal beds. Squeezed into such a narrow space, the crystals grew outward in a flat, radiating pattern instead of their usual cubes. They're found almost exclusively in the coal mines around Sparta, Illinois — and since those mines have closed, these flat golden "suns" are becoming harder to find.
